Supporting the SAFE Coral Program

For decades, AZA member facilities have invested millions in supporting inwater and land-based Atlantic coral conservation efforts including broodstock holding and propagation for US reef restoration.

We've accomplished so much already:

  • Over the past six years, collaborative grant recruitment and management have provided more than $2 million in support for coral holding and propagation facilities in 14 U.S. states.

  • Partner facilities now manage the care and welfare of nearly 3,000 rescue corals, propagate millions of offspring for reef resilience, and safeguard hundreds of threatened and endangered assurance populations.

  • More than ten active working groups have advanced coral science in husbandry, welfare, nursery management (both land-based and in-water), propagation, and coral health.

  • Hundreds of articles, news stories, social posts, and scientific papers by program partners have expanded the coral science library, influenced policy, and elevated public awareness of the reef crisis.

  • The Coral Aquarist Program, the world’s first course dedicated to training coral aquarists and restoration practitioners, has entered its third year, drawing participants from across the U.S., the Caribbean, and beyond.

  • Communication, education, and social science initiatives have deepened public appreciation for reef ecosystems and inspired stronger expectations for effective policy and resource management.

With your financial support, we can do even more for our reefs, and support similar efforts globally.

The immediate need of the SAFE Coral Program for 2026 is $115,000 to fund continued centralized program administration, including program coordination and facilitation services, website and communication hub management, and the administration of high performing programs like the Coral Aquarist Program (CAP), the Florida Reef Tract Rescue Project (FRTRP), and Maintenance Animal Propagation (MAP) Network.

SAFE Coral accepts financial support from anyone interested in continuing our efforts towards significant conservation impact. Contributions are welcomed at various levels.
